Screen Time vs Digital Skills: Understanding the Difference

One of the biggest concerns many parents have today is screen time. With children spending increasing amounts of time on phones, tablets, computers, and gaming devices, it is understandable that families are questioning how technology is impacting learning, development, and wellbeing.
However, not all screen time is created equal.
There is a significant difference between passive screen time and the development of meaningful digital skills. Understanding this difference is becoming increasingly important as Coding & Robotics, Digital Technologies, and digital literacy become part of modern education.
Passive screen time typically involves consuming content. This may include watching videos, scrolling through social media, or playing games that require very little thinking or problem-solving. While there can be educational value in some forms of digital content, passive use often places learners in the role of consumers rather than creators.
Digital skills, on the other hand, involve active engagement with technology. Learners use technology to create, solve problems, think critically, communicate ideas, and develop solutions. Activities such as coding, robotics, animation design, digital storytelling, game creation, and problem-solving challenges encourage learners to become active participants in their learning.
This distinction is one of the key reasons Coding & Robotics has been introduced into the South African CAPS curriculum.
Coding & Robotics is not about placing children in front of screens for longer periods of time. It is about developing computational thinking, creativity, logical reasoning, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Learners learn how to break down complex tasks into smaller steps, identify patterns, create solutions, test their ideas, and improve them through debugging.
These skills extend far beyond technology.
In Mathematics, learners strengthen logical thinking, sequencing, pattern recognition, and problem-solving. In English, they learn to communicate instructions clearly and explain their thinking. In Science and Technology, they investigate systems, processes, and innovation. Life Skills is strengthened through teamwork, resilience, creativity, and critical thinking.
Digital literacy is another important component of modern education. Learners need to understand how technology works, how to use digital tools responsibly, how to evaluate information online, and how to behave safely and respectfully in digital environments. These skills are becoming essential for success in both education and future careers.
As South Africa continues to embrace Coding & Robotics and Digital Technologies in schools, it is important for parents and educators to shift the conversation from screen time alone to the quality of technology use.
The question is no longer simply, "How much time are learners spending on devices?"
A more important question may be:
"What skills are learners developing while using technology?"
When technology is used to create, design, solve problems, collaborate, and think critically, it becomes a powerful educational tool that helps prepare learners for the future.
