Teaching Coding and Robotics Through Maths, Literacy and Life Skills

Coding and Robotics can feel like one more thing to squeeze into an already busy Foundation Phase day. But the starting point is often something you’re already teaching.

Patterns, stories and everyday routines offer simple opportunities to introduce coding concepts in Grades R–3.

Maths: Spot the Pattern

Ask learners to build a repeating pattern using coloured counters, shapes or claps. Can they explain the rule and predict what comes next?

They’re practicing pattern recognition, a skill used in both maths and coding. Giving directions along a number grid also introduces sequencing, counting and spatial awareness.

Literacy: Put the Story in Order

Let learners arrange pictures from a story in the correct order, then explain what happened first, next and last.

That same thinking helps them understand an algorithm: a sequence of steps. For a playful challenge, ask them to give a “robot teacher” exact instructions for packing a schoolbag. Missing steps quickly become a lesson in clear communication and debugging!

Life Skills: Work Through Everyday Problems

Explore the steps involved in washing hands or getting ready for school. What happens if a step is missing or in the wrong order?

Learners practice breaking a task into smaller parts, checking their instructions and finding ways to improve them, all useful foundations for coding and problem-solving.

Turn Familiar Activities into Confident Teaching

These activities are starting points. Knowing which coding concepts they teach and how to develop them further, helps you plan with purpose.

Club Electron’s CAPS-aligned Foundation Phase Coding and Robotics teacher course offers practical, classroom-ready guidance for Grades R–3. It is SACE accredited, and no previous coding experience is needed.

Build on what you already do well and bring fresh possibilities into your classroom.
