Why You Don’t Need to Be a Tech Expert to Teach Coding & Robotics in the Foundation Phase


For many Foundation Phase teachers, the introduction of Coding & Robotics into the CAPS curriculum has brought with it a very understandable question:


“How am I supposed to teach Coding & Robotics when I don’t know how to code?”

If that sounds familiar, you are certainly not alone.


Many experienced and highly capable South African teachers completed their training long before Coding & Robotics became part of the school curriculum. Suddenly being expected to teach concepts such as algorithms, computational thinking, debugging, patterns and digital concepts can understandably feel like stepping into completely unfamiliar territory.


But there is something important that every Foundation Phase teacher should know:

You do not need to become a computer programmer to teach Coding & Robotics effectively.


In fact, you may already be teaching many of the skills behind it without realizing it.


You Already Teach More “Coding” Than You Think


Think about some of the things that happen in a Foundation Phase classroom every day.

  • A learner follows a set of instructions to complete an activity.

  • A class identifies the next item in a pattern.

  • Learners break a task into smaller steps.

  • A child tries something, discovers that it doesn't work, changes their approach and tries again.

  • The class gives directions such as forward, backwards, left and right.


These are all closely connected to the thinking skills developed through Coding & Robotics.


Coding introduces learners to creating clear, logical instructions. Computational thinking teaches them how to break problems down and develop solutions. Debugging teaches them to identify what went wrong, make a change and try again.

For young learners, these concepts don't necessarily require complicated computer programs or expensive robots.


Coding & Robotics Is About Thinking Before It Is About Technology


One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding Coding & Robotics education is that every lesson needs a computer, tablet or robot.


It doesn't.


The Foundation Phase curriculum provides an opportunity to develop the foundations of coding, robotics, computational thinking, problem-solving and digital skills in age-appropriate ways.


Children can learn sequencing by directing a classmate through an obstacle course.

They can develop algorithms by putting picture cards showing the steps of an everyday activity into the correct order.

  • They can practice debugging by finding the incorrect instruction in a sequence.

  • They can explore patterns through movement, colours, shapes, numbers and sounds.

These activities build the thinking processes learners will later use when they begin working with more advanced technology.


The Challenge Isn't Becoming a Coder - It's Understanding What to Teach


This is where teacher training becomes particularly valuable.

You don't need to know everything about programming. You need to understand what each curriculum competency means, what learners are expected to achieve and how you can turn those outcomes into meaningful classroom activities.


Once the terminology is broken down and connected to familiar teaching practices, Coding & Robotics becomes far less intimidating. And because the subject overlaps naturally with other areas of the Foundation Phase curriculum, it doesn't always have to exist in isolation.


  • A sequencing activity can incorporate Literacy.

  • Pattern recognition can reinforce Mathematics.

  • Giving and following instructions develops communication and language skills.

  • Problem-solving, collaboration and perseverance connect naturally with Life Skills.


Coding & Robotics can therefore become another way of developing skills you are already helping children build.


What If You're Not a Teacher?


Understanding these concepts isn't only useful for qualified teachers.

Teaching assistants are increasingly expected to support Coding & Robotics activities in classrooms. Tutors and aftercare facilitators may be helping children with skills they weren't taught themselves.


And many parents and guardians want to support what their children are learning at school but simply don't know where to begin.


Learning the foundations of Coding & Robotics gives you the confidence to explore these concepts alongside a child rather than feeling that technology is something you need to already understand.


You don't have to know every answer.

Sometimes one of the most valuable things an adult can say is:

“Let's work it out together.”


That process of testing, questioning, making mistakes and finding a solution is exactly the kind of thinking Coding & Robotics is designed to develop.
